The majority of clothes being produced now are made of polyester or other plastic products. These fabrics are not breathable, so no matter how light and airy they seem you'll be sweating like a pig in them. And when it's cold, they don't conserve warmth as well as natural fabrics. They're the absolute worst choice in any situation, but they're popular with big brands for being cheap to produce.
Even when you're looking at a so-called luxury brand, they are cutting corners too, at this stage of their existence, where their number one priority is to make more money than last season. They expect you to pay for nothing worthwhile but a logo to show off, and they think you're too stupid to notice the quality and creativity dropping off a cliff.
In the fashion world, seasons are getting shorter and shorter, purely for financial gain, at the cost of the clothes themselves, because a well made garment takes time. Good design takes time. Making sure it won't fall apart in a week takes time. But who cares, if you're only gonna wear it three times in a month before throwing it out? These money grabbing parasites are dependent on you thinking like this.
Consequently, it is no surprise to find out that fast fashion is responsible for more CO2 emissions than all international flights. It's a mind boggling amount to come from one industry, and all the more infuriating because it is such an unnecessary and avoidable waste - things can be so different.
You're not stupid, and you're not falling for their nonsense any more. You don't have to be an expert in fashion to spot a unique design, feel the difference in comfort from wearing the right fabrics, or to continue to care for a garment that has been cared for from its creation and see it treat you well in return.
Well, fixing the environment is bigger than individual choices, so pressuring the governments of the world to transition away from fossil fuels is the main thing.
But, as this is a fashion based space, I'll give you some fashion advice - don't buy so much. Seriously. Treating fashion as a special treat you occasionally indulge in is not only better for the environment - it infinitely improves your personal style.
Don't settle for just a beautiful pattern, a comfortable fabric, a flattering fit, or manufacturing that meets your values - look for clothes that have all of this, plus style you haven't seen anywhere else. It's not an unreasonable thing to ask for. And yet, you may find your choices to be pretty limited - but we're still an option, I'm pretty confident.
I've already been doing this for years before starting this shop, and I think you'll appreciate my unique style and my common sense approach to sustainability. - Lily
The best thing about Onion Blossom products is that almost all our materials are repurposed or recycled.
For example, much of the fabric used is donated by friends and family, clothes and bedding that has served its original purpose and is ready for something new. Anything we do have to buy, like a specific type of fabric, decorative items like buttons and ribbons, or safety pins, we go to a great amount of effort to source it second hand and within the UK. Otherwise, we buy the most eco friendly version, for example the formula of resin sealant for our bottle top badges is the most eco-friendly and non-toxic version we could find after extensive research.
The benefit of a small business is that we can make changes quickly and adapt to new challenges; we will always try to do better where we can.
